Sensory Organ Maintenance

Because we are the result of our sensory experiences, it’s important to cultivate daily habits that aim to maintain and cleanse the organs that are responsible for taking in our sensory experiences.

Tongue Scraping

Tongue scraping is a traditional Ayurvedic practice that removes coating from the surface of the tongue. Ayurveda considers the coating to be an accumulation of toxins. Left untreated, the toxins contribute to bad breathe and diminished taste in the mouth. The process of cleansing the tongue works to massage the area, while improving hygiene and taste.

The tongue is considered an important site for reflexes to the organs. A healthy tongue improves the ability of the stomach and intestine to do their job of digesting food. In this way, we say that cleansing the tongue improves the force of digestion.

Instructions

1. Purchase a tongue cleaner also called a tongue scraper. Often these are made of stainless steel but may also be prepared from copper or from plastic.

2. The instrument is held in one hand and the curved end is placed on the back of the tongue,

3. Move the instrument from the back to the front scraping off the coating of the tongue. Rinse the instrument as often as needed and repeat 3-5X.

Nasal Cleansing (Neti Pot)

Nasal irrigation cleanses the nasal passages and sinuses offering many important health benefits to the body and mind. As a result of the practice, dust, pollens and pollutants such as smoke are removed. In those suffering from allergies, cleansing the nasal passages and sinuses often reduces allergy symptoms. The benefits of nasal irrigation, however, go beyond the physical body. The practice also cleanses the mind resulting in a higher level of being alert and awake.

Note: It is safest to use purified, boiled or distilled water for this practice as there is a miniscule risk of micro-organisms being in the water. There have only been a few cases of infection caused by neti noted in the literature and this has occurred in areas where unusual micro-organisms exist such as the subtropical swamp lands of the South Eastern United States. Even in those cases, however, it is unclear if neti was actually the cause of the infections, but it is possible. It should also be noted that micro-organisms can get into water even after it has been treated, as it flows through pipes. Most people use warm tap water and do not have any problem. To remove any risk, it is recommended that water be purified through microfiltration, distillation or boiling.

Eye Cleansing

Washing the eyes removes waste secretions that build up over time. In addition, the herbs used in the eye washes help to restore balance to pitta dosha. Thus, the cleansing process improves burning and red eyes. Ayurveda also teaches that regular eye washing helps to sustain one’s vision. Washing the eyes only needs to take place once per week in individuals who do not experience redness or burning of the eyes. However, it can be practiced daily in those who are experiencing significant redness and burning. Eye washes are also beneficial for the prevention and treatment of glaucoma, conjunctivitis and eyelid infections.

Eye wash solutions are usually prepared from rose water, however other eye wash formulations exist.

Instructions for Rose Water

1. Purchase an eye cup from a local drug store.

2. Purchase rose hydrosol. This is basic rose water.

3. Fill a cup half way with rose water.

4. Fill the other half of the cup with warm distilled water. The overall temperature of the solution should be about body temperature, warm but not hot.

Instructions Once the Wash Has Been Prepared

1. Bend your head forward and place you eye into the cup creating a tight seal with the rim of the cup.

2. Tip your head back keeping the cup firmly attached to your eye.

3. Open your eye and look into the cup. Blink 4-5X.

4. Bend your head forward and remove the cup.

8. Repeat on the other side. Discard the solution when complete.

Self Oil Massage

The stimulation to the skin provided by self-touch is so important. By caring and nurturing ourselves, self-esteem and self-love are improved greatly.

The Benefits of Oil Massage

• Improves the function of the immune system

• Stabilizes the mind

• Reduces injuries to the body by keeping muscles and joints fluid

• Improves self-esteem

Which Oil to Use

The oils that are used for self-oil massage are based on the dosha that a person is trying to manage or reduce. Each of the oils selected below has special properties that help to bring the dosha back into balance and in doing so, restore proper physiology.

Vata: Sesame or Almond

Pitta: Coconut or Sunflower

Kapha: Safflower or Mustard

Instructions

1. Place cold-processed, organic oil into an 8 oz. container. A small glass bottle is best but you may also use a plastic bottle that is free from BPA.

2. The bottle is then placed in a small pan of hot water to warm up the oil. When the oil in the bottle is warm, remove it from the pan. Use the warm oil for your massage.

There is no standardized order in which you must massage your body. However, it can be helpful for those with a vata and pitta nature to begin at the top of the head and end at the feet and for those with a kapha nature to begin at the feet and end at the top of the head. When applying the oil, it is important to use long strokes and some friction in order to help the oil absorb into the body. Those with a vata nature should use as much oil as they can tolerate. Those with a pitta and kapha nature should use a lighter amount of oil. The oil should be left on the body for as long as possible to allow for maximum absorption. When applying oil in the morning, apply the oil before other practices to allow it to absorb prior to taking a morning shower. When taking a shower, do not use much soap except where necessary. Use hot water and then pat yourself dry.

Vata: Use a large amount of oil and massage from head to feet

Pitta: Use a smaller amount of oil and massage from head to feet

Kapha: Use a smaller amount of oil and massage from feet to head
