 Communication and the Doshas

Vata

A person with a Vata imbalance tends to speak without passion (cold), speaks quickly, possibly with agitation or frequent changes of subject (mobile). Communication lacks deep concern or compassion (dry) and does not consider the listener (hard). It is rather superficial (light), rough, and irritating. It carries you along like a story (flowing) that is told indirectly (subtle) but eventually leads to an understanding (clear) if the listener is able to follow along.

If you have a Vata imbalance, surround yourself with people who communicate with gentle loving kindness (more Kapha). If you are in balance, communicate in a conscious manner, respectful of your own natural tendencies.

Pitta

A person with a Pitta imbalance uses words that include a lot of judgment and their tone is often passionate and righteous (hot). Communication is very logical, easy to understand (clear) and to the point (sharp). More often than not, the heat of Pitta overwhelms the small amount of water in the dosha, this leads to dryness and hardness. As a result, communication often lacks compassion (dry) and attitudes become rigid (hard) over time. Tone and inflection become aggressive (rough). This communication style is the most volatile and often leads to arguments (unstable).

If you have a Pitta imbalance, avoid being in communication with other people who have a Pitta imbalance. When you are back in balance, communicate in a conscious manner, respectful of your natural tendencies.

Kapha

A person with a Kapha imbalance communicates in a quiet (soft), slow (stable) and rather uninspiring (heavy) manner. There may be a lot of intended meaning in their communication (dense) but it is rarely direct and to the point (dull). Thus, it is difficult to understand (cloudy). Their tone of voice is pleasant (smooth). Lacking in passion (cold), the communication style is not very motivating and it is not very critical. The words used are most often kind (soft) and they easily express compassion and empathy (moist). The here and now (gross) is the subject of their communication. Esoteric conversation is rarely initiated.

If you have a Kapha imbalance, try communicating with one of your Pitta or Vata friends. Their nature will help get things in motion again. When you are back in balance, communicate in a conscious manner, respectful of your natural tendencies.

 Mantras and Chanting

A mantra is a sacred sound. Some mantras are single words, others are sentences or statements. They are powerful sounds that, when repeated, either carve out a positive groove in our consciousness or heal a negative groove that already exists.
